October 14, 2005, Dr. Douglas Marsteller
gets to cut the cake following the successful defense of his dissertation,
entitled “Brain metabolism and behavior shaped by enhanced glucocorticoid
and serotonergic action.” Advisor, Dr. Stephen L. Dewey, backs
him!
December 2004 Commencement. Dr.
Yan Zhang (c.) poses with her admired advisor, Dr. Stella Tsirka (l.)
and her favorite Bev (r.). Dr. Zhang successfully defended 09/10/04,
accepted a postdoc position with Dr. Joel Levine (Neurobiology and Behavior
at Stony Brook University) so that she could remain in the area while
her husband and doctoral candidiate, Yousong Wang, completes his training.

Following the successful defense of his
dissertation, entitled “Microglia Recruitment during Excitotoxicity,”
Dr. Jack Sheehan gets down to business and signs the “Ph.D.” Congratulations
banner! The banner is then hung up on the board by the upcoming
doctoral candidates. It is displayed at every Pharmacology doctoral
reception. Since the mid’90’s, each new Ph.D. has signed their
name, followed by “Ph.D.” and the date of their defense. [Monday,

Dr. Daniel F. Bogenhagen toasts the newest
Ph.D. from his lab, Dr. Yousong Wang! Dr. Wang’s dissertation
entitled, “Proteins Associated with mtDNA in Higher Eukaryotes,”
after he successfully defended it on Friday, February 3, 2006. (Dr.
Wang is the “suit”!)
Fifth Year Pharmacology Doctoral candidate,
Mark Yondola (Advisors: Dr. Pat Hearing and Dr. Caroline F. Kisker),
is shown here giving a talk on his favorite protein (Adenovirus E4 ORF3,
of course!) at the 3rd Annual Pharmacology Graduate Students’
Symposium, held on June 19, 2006 at the Charles B. Wang Center at Stony
Brook University. This Symposium is for the students, by the students
with a featured speaker at noon for the University’s science community.

Doctoral Candidate, Lidija Staresincic,
presents a “Snapshot” of her research to faculty and graduate students
at the 2006 Annual Fall Symposium Three Students have five minutes
to speak about one slide (the snapshot moment) that made a difference
(good, bad, or ugly) in their graduate research. Ballots are given
out prior to the talks and the audience selects a winner who receives
a prize (usually a gift card).
