DEGREE AWARDED: Ph.D. in Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology
The faculty of the Department of Pharmacological Sciences, in conjunction with faculty members in other Departments at Stony Brook and scientists from Brookhaven National Laboratories and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratories, offer training in the Graduate Program in Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology leading to the Ph.D. degree. The goal of this program is to prepare students for positions in academia or for leadership positions in industry. The graduate program has benefited from 31 years of continuous, competitively awarded funding from the National Institutes of Health.
Graduate training in this interdisciplinary program is intended to provide students with a broad background in molecular and cellular biology. During the first two years, students complete a series of required and elective courses and participate in individualized research tutorials with program faculty. Students also participate in student seminars, journal clubs and a seminar program featuring visiting faculty.
Graduate students benefit from a wide range of modern facilities for biochemical, molecular and cellular biological, chemical, biophysical, and toxicological research. Research activities are supported by a total of over $19 million in annual grants to individual laboratories and cooperative program projects.
The Pharmacology Department at Stony Brook offers a collegial atmosphere with one of the highest ratios of postdoctoral to predoctoral researchers of any Pharmacology Department in the country. Students in Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology work alongside students from several other graduate programs at Stony Brook, including Molecular and Cellular Biology, Neurobiology, Chemistry, Genetics, Microbiology, Structural Biology, and Physiology and Biophysics. Several students in Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology have been trainees in the NIH-funded MSTP (Medical Scientist Training Program). This comprehensive list reports recent publications resulting from research in laboratories affiliated with the Program.
