Admissions

All candidates for admission to our Ph.D. Training Program should apply online* through Stony Brook University Graduate School's website. Our formal Program name is The Graduate Training Program in Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology, but we are often referred to as just Pharmacology!

Students with a wide variety of undergraduate majors have had very successful graduate careers in this Program. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the Program, coursework in Physical Chemistry and/or Physiology is strongly recommended. Organic chemistry is a prerequisite for admission. A typical applicant will also have taken upper-level undergraduate courses in Biochemistry and at least one of the following: Cell Biology, Genetics or Neurobiology. Members of minority groups and prospective applicants with post-baccalaureate laboratory-based research experience are encouraged to apply.

(A no-cost preliminary electronic "short" application form for our Pharmacology program can be filled out - please see below.   Short applications forms for Fall 2010 will be reviewed beginning August 15, 2009.

Our Program's Preliminary Electronic Application "Short Form!"

We realize that it can be cumbersome and expensive to send the complete application required by the Graduate School. As an option , we are happy to prescreen prospective applicants for their suitability for our training program. Please fill out the electronic short form application:      Short Form Application

If your short form application is suitable we will contact you no later than December 15 to ask you to complete the entire application packet.

Note for International students: We receive hundreds of requests for application materials each year from sites outside North America. Due to the expense of international mail, we strongly recommend that all international applicants use the electronic short form. Please submit the form by November 15.

Reactivating a Previous Application: Applicants who applied for admission to our Pharmacology Graduate Program within the last twelve months but did not enroll may reactivate their previous application. Contact our program in writing (email is fine) that you would like your application reactivated for the next class. By the next Jan 15 deadline, you will have to reapply online for the next Fall Class.  You may mail updated material to strengthen your application. For example, transcripts with any additional courses, retaken GRE scores, an updated Personal Statement, and, if more research experience has been added, additional letters of recommendation from your current supervisor.
If you have any questions or concerns about our application process, please email us at grad@pharm.stonybrook.edu
