The Program is open to all qualified applicants,
regardless of state of residence. Candidates from outside of New York
State are encouraged to apply. Women
and members of under represented minority groups are also encouraged
to apply. Admission to the SBU MSTP is coordinated through the School
of Medicine.
Except for the emphasis on research experience, criteria for medical
school admission are similar to those for the MSTP (see below). Students
are selected
for interview based on their application material and recommendation
letters. Interviews for the MSTP and the School of Medicine are conducted
during the same visit to the campus.
Most prospective students interview with five faculty members
(including both clinical and basic scientists and the program
director), are given the opportunity to meet informally with
MSTP Fellows, and may view short (about 15 min each) informational
videotapes featuring Brookhaven National Laboratory and Cold
Spring Harbor Laboratory. Brookhaven and Cold Spring Harbor
participate fully in the SBU MSTP. Faculty from both institutions
serve on the MSTP Steering Committee and play an important
role in MSTP admissions and in formation of Program policy.
Admission to the SBU MSTP requires parallel admission to the medical school.
There is close coordination between the MSTP admissions committee and the medical
school admissions committee. MSTP committee impressions and interview reports,
and the MSTP admissions committee recommendation are presented to the medical
school admissions committee; the recommendation of the MSTP committee constitutes
an important part of the total evaluation of MSTP candidates for admission to
medical school. Candidates not offered an MSTP slot will be considered without
disadvantage for admission to the medical school.
Each year, the SBU MSTP accepts 5-7 fully-funded Fellows. No unfunded
positions are offered. The Program is partially supported by an NIH MSTP
Training Grant
with additional support provided by the Dean's Office in the School of
Medicine and individual SBU Graduate Programs (generally, from advisors'
research
grants). Criteria for admission to the SBU MSTP include MCAT scores,
GRE scores (if available; the GRE is not mandatory), undergraduate and
other
grade-point-averages, letters of recommendation and most particularly,
research experience. Interviewers' impressions are weighed heavily in
the evaluation.
MCAT/GRE SCORES
As noted previously, the MCAT is used by both admissions committees in evaluating MSTP candidates and is required for consideration by the medical school. Accordingly, MCAT scores are accepted by both the MSTP and the Graduate School in lieu of GRE scores. If GRE scores are available, MSTP applicants are urged to provide them. Moreover, individual Graduate Programs may require GRE scores of MSTP Fellows before formal Graduate Program matriculation. MSTP Fellows are urged to consult with particular Graduate Programs of interest during their first year at Stony Brook.
HOW TO APPLY
In order to apply for the MSTP at Stony Brook, applicants first apply
for the MD Program via American Medical Colleges Application Service
(applicants should check the box on the AMCAS application "interest
in MSTP"). When applicants submit their AMCAS, they will be
notified how to submit the secondary application for the MD Program
and the MSTP application. Applicants must submit both the secondary
application and the MSTP application. Letters of recommendation are
also required for the application to be considered complete. Upon
receipt of the completed AMCAS materials, the Office of Admissions
will forward the Supplementary Stony Brook application and instructions
and materials related to the Medical Scientist Training Program.
Applications to the MSTP are screened by the Steering Committee,
and applicants of interest invited for a formal interview. The MSTP
consider all candidates equally, regardless of state of residence,
and particularly encourages applications from women and members of
racial and/or ethnic groups currently under represented in biomedical
science.
DEADLINES
All
AMCAS applications must be submitted prior to December 15, 2008.
All supplementary applications must be submitted prior to December
30, 2008.
Supportive material should also reach Stony Brook University by
that date, although we recognize that the applicant is not always
in complete control of these mailings. Applicants are advised to
apply early.
