COMBINING CLINICAL AND RESEARCH CAREERS IN NEUROSCIENCE SYMPOSIUM
May 29-30, 2009 / Omni Shoreham Hotel / Washington, DC

47 exceptionally qualified students from throughout the United States participated in the program and the feedback we received was outstanding. The 2008 course was our sixth iteration of this annual course and we are now seeing many of those who participated in our earlier courses at neurology and child neurology residency interviews.

Many of these individuals cite this course as playing a crucial role in their decision to pursue a clinician/scientist career in neuroscience, and we are excited to announce the seventh edition of this valuable course on “Combining Clinical and Research Careers in Neuroscience” to be held May 29-30, 2009 at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, DC. As in the past, the course is sponsored by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), together with the Association of University Professors of Neurology (AUPN) and the American Neurological Association (ANA).

We invite students who may be candidates for combined research and clinical careers in the neurosciences, i.e., future clinician-scientists, to apply to attend this meeting in Washington, DC. An outstanding group of academic neurologists will discuss strategies for combining research and clinical activities from personal perspectives. Representatives from NINDS will present the many options that exist for continued research training, career development, research support, and repayment of academic debt. Most importantly, the students have ample time to interact with the faculty in small group discussions that supplement the formal presentations.

We are looking for medical students who have completed at least one year of research training during medical school in disciplines pertinent to neurobiology. The ideal candidate will have also completed some required clinical clerkships, as this is the time when many students will be thinking about further clinical training. Medical students at other stages of their training may also be candidates. Both MD-PhD students and MDs with significant research training are encouraged to apply. Travel and lodging expenses for attendees will be covered.

Again, previous meetings have been a great success. Students felt that they received information highly relevant to their career planning and that this meeting helped demystify the clinician-scientist career pathway.

Please forward this announcement, application form and course agenda to all students who might be eligible for this program so that they can plan to participate in this outstanding opportunity. The course application deadline is APRIL 1, 2009

Please contact the AUPN Executive Office at aupn@llmsi.com or (952) 545-6724 with any additional questions on the program.

Sincerely,

Story C. Landis, Ph.D.
Director, NINDS

American Physician Scientists Association

We are a student driven organization dedicated to the career development of physician-scientists and serve as a forum for research oriented medical students, residents, and fellows. We would like to extend an invitation to your current MD-PhD students at Stony Brook University Health Sciences Center Scho to attend our annual meeting, which we feel would be of great interest and highly beneficial to them.

Our annual meeting will be held in parallel with the American Society of Clinical Investigation (ASCI) and the Association of American Physicians (AAP) Joint Meeting at the Fairmont Hotel in Chicago on April 24-26, 2009; APSA registrants are given complimentary registration to the ASCI/AAP meeting. The APSA meeting provides medical students with an opportunity to network with like-minded students and trainees; we anticipate up to 300 registrants representing a national cross section of physician-scientist trainees. In addition, there will be many opportunities to interact with established, highly successful physician scientists.

Our annual meeting includes six keynote addresses representing leaders in academic medicine, industry, and the NIH, as well as three career development programs including a Post-Graduate Career Opportunities Panel Discussion. This year's APSA speakers and panelists include Dr. Griffin Rodgers (NIH, NIDDK Director), Dr. James Gavin III (CEO & Chief Medical Officer, Healing Our Village, Inc.), Dr. Jeffrey Friedman (The Rockefeller University), Dr. Mary Dinauer (Indiana University), Dr. Pamela Schwartzberg (NIH, NHGRI), Dr. Dennis Ausiello (Harvard University, Pfizer Board Member), and Dr. David Engman (Northwestern University), who are just some of the 20+ speakers that will be speaking to the combined APSA, ASCI, and AAP meeting. For more details on our meeting and the complete program, please visit our meeting website at http://meeting.physicianscientists.org.

Numerous awards are offered to students who are encouraged to submit their abstracts to be considered for travel awards ($500) and present their research to win numerous poster awards ($1000) offered by the APSA, ASCI/AAP, and CSCR/MWAFMR. However, the deadline for submitting abstracts to be considered for the CSCR/MWAFMR travel awards is fast approaching (December 12, 2008). The deadline for the APSA/ASCI/AAP Poster Session will be January 31, 2009.

If you are interested in hearing more about our meeting or our organization, we would love to send you additional materials containing the pertinent information for registering that you can forward to your students.

Best regards,

The 2nd Annual New York Regional Symposium of the American Physician Scientists Association (APSA) will be taking place November 22, 2008 at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. APSA is a national student organization dedicated to serving physician-scientists in training and is particularly focused on providing resources, networking and career development. One goal of our organization is to provide vertical mentoring for pre-medical, medical, and MD/PhD students interested in having a research component to their career.

The 2008 Symposium will feature keynote presentations focused on research and career development by Leon Rosenberg, MD, Katherine High, MD, Mark Ptashne, PhD, and Vern Schramm, PhD. Breakout sessions with panel discussions will allow attendees to gather information about a broad variety of topics including MD vs. MD/PhD vs. PhD career options, transitions throughout MD/PhD training, and advice on residency programs and admissions. We hope this conference will be very useful to MD and MD/PhD students in training.

To register and see the full schedule or find more information about the meeting, please visit the meeting website: nymeeting.physicianscientists.org. Last year's event sold out a number of weeks in advance, so please encourage your students to register early.

Sincerely,
