The normal health insurance coverage sequence of events for
MSTP students:
1)
State Graduate NYSHIP or Graduate Student Fellows health insurance during
the first two
years while students are in med school; then during graduate school
years, the first year of which is covered by the training grant; and
finally
2) Return to State Graduate NYSHIP health insurance
during the final two years, after students have re-matriculated into
medical school.
In subsequent years, the graduate health insurance is covered by the
advisor and whether he/she covers the extra cost is between the student
and advisor.
The source of stipend funding during the final two years of med
school should also be the source of insurance coverage. Specially,
if a student has a fellowship, then the insurance should be covered
from it (assuming that it was budgeted in the fellowship). Otherwise,
the insurance will be covered by the program.
Finally,
students can request additional coverage for spouse or family
under any plan, but will have to cover the difference between
the expanded plan & what they would normally receive for the
appropriate respective individual policy.
If you are enrolled in any of the following health
insurance plans, RF Graduate (POMCO) Fellowship, RF (POMCO) Graduate,
State Graduate NYSHIP Benefits, CSHL and BNL, please go to the SOLAR
system for instructions on filing a waiver for SHIP to opt out of the
medical student health insurance plan for Fall 2009 / Spring 2010. If
you're unable to bring up the instructions on the SOLAR system, It is
important that you e-mail Leta
Edelson for further details and instructions about the
online waiver.
Please note the online SOLAR waiver for domestic students can waiver
through September 28, 2009. All fall waivers must be completed on SOLAR
by September 29, 2009. Usually students who waive in the fall, find
the waiver rolls into spring. If a student want to make a change effective
January 16, 2010, he or she can do so by February 28, 2010. All spring
waivers must be completed on SOLAR by February 28, 2010.
The MSTP Program nor the Dean's office can not cover fees that should
have been removed through the waiver process.
